What Does a Preferred Provider Dentist Mean? Hocking Guide

If you've ever scrolled through your health fund's website and seen the term "preferred provider dentist", you're not alone in wondering what it actually means for your wallet. It sounds like marketing language, but it's a real arrangement that can change how much you pay out of pocket. At Hocking Dental Care, we're a preferred provider for several major funds, so let's walk through what that actually means for you and your family.

This article explains how preferred-provider agreements work, why they usually mean a smaller gap rather than a free visit, and how you can check your own cover before you sit in the chair.

What is a preferred provider dentist?

A preferred provider dentist is simply a dentist who has an agreement with a particular health fund. Under that agreement, the dentist agrees to certain fee arrangements for members of that fund, and in return the fund may offer those members a better rebate or a reduced gap on some treatments.

It doesn't mean the dentist is more qualified, more experienced, or better at their job. It's a business arrangement between the practice and the fund, nothing more. The quality of your care doesn't change depending on whether your dentist is a preferred provider or not.

At Hocking Dental Care, we're a preferred provider for HBF, Medibank, HCF, nib and Bupa. You can read more detail on our health fund preferred providers page, which lists how each of these arrangements generally works.

Why the gap is usually smaller, not free

This is the part that trips a lot of people up. Being a preferred provider does not mean your dental visit is free. It usually means the gap between what the fund pays and what you owe is smaller than it would be at a dentist with no agreement in place.

How much smaller depends on a few things:

  • which fund you're with and your level of extras cover
  • the specific treatment you're having, since item numbers vary
  • how much of your annual limit you've already used
  • whether you've served any waiting periods on your policy

Some simple preventive treatments, like a check-up, might end up with little or no gap for some members. Other treatments, especially more involved ones, will usually still have some cost to you even with a preferred-provider rebate applied. The exact figures depend on your personal policy, so we always encourage you to check with your fund directly rather than assume.

HBF, Medibank, HCF, nib and Bupa preferred provider arrangements

Each fund runs its own version of a preferred-provider network, and the rules differ slightly between them.

HBF preferred provider dentist

As an HBF preferred provider, our agreement with HBF can mean a reduced gap on eligible treatments for HBF members with extras cover. The exact benefit depends on your specific policy and how much of your annual limit remains.

Medibank preferred provider dentist

Medibank also runs a preferred-provider style arrangement for its members. If you're with Medibank and have extras cover, it's worth checking what your policy offers at a preferred-provider practice like ours before you book.

HCF preferred provider dentist

HCF members with extras cover may see a reduced gap on certain treatments when visiting a preferred provider. As with the other funds, the benefit depends on your level of cover and the treatment involved.

Bupa preferred provider dentist

Bupa's arrangement works along similar lines. Being a Bupa preferred provider can mean a smaller gap for Bupa members with extras cover, again depending on your individual policy details.

We're also a preferred provider for nib. In every case, the safest approach is to call your fund, or check their member portal, before your appointment so you know roughly what to expect.

How we check your cover before any treatment starts

At Hocking Dental Care, we don't want you guessing about costs. Before any treatment begins, our team gives you a written estimate that includes the item numbers for each procedure. You can take those item numbers straight to your fund, or we can help you understand them, so there are no surprises.

We also use HICAPS claiming on the spot. That means for most funds, your rebate is processed right there at the practice, and you only need to pay the gap amount at the time of your visit. If your fund isn't one we hold a preferred-provider agreement with, you can usually still claim through HICAPS; it's just that the preferred-provider benefit won't apply to your rebate.

If you're a new patient wondering how any of this fits together, our new patients page explains what to expect at your first visit, including how we handle paperwork and cover.

A quick note on timing your extras

If you're reading this towards the end of the year, it's worth knowing that most extras limits reset on 31 December, but reset dates can vary by fund and policy, so check yours directly. If you have remaining benefit sitting unused, booking a check-up before the reset can help you make use of it before it disappears.

Frequently asked questions

Does preferred provider mean the dentist is better?

No. It simply means the practice has an agreement with that health fund. It has nothing to do with the skill or experience of the dentist treating you.

Will I pay nothing if my dentist is a preferred provider?

Not necessarily. A preferred-provider arrangement usually means a smaller gap on eligible treatments, not a free visit. Your actual out-of-pocket cost depends on your policy, your remaining limits and the treatment itself.

What if my health fund isn't HBF, Medibank, HCF, nib or Bupa?

You can still claim with us. We use HICAPS to process claims on the spot for other funds too; it's just that the preferred-provider benefit is specific to the funds we hold agreements with.

How do I find out exactly what my rebate will be?

The best way is to check with your fund directly, using the item numbers from our written estimate. Your fund can tell you exactly what applies to your policy and how much of your annual limit is left.

Can I still book if I'm not sure how my cover works?

Yes. You don't need to work it out alone. Let us know your fund when you book, and our team can talk you through the general process and give you a written estimate before anything starts.

Understanding preferred-provider agreements doesn't have to be complicated. The main thing to remember is that it usually means a smaller gap, backed by a written estimate with item numbers so you know where you stand before treatment begins.
