Frequently asked questions

Why do I need to go to the dentist every 6 months?
Visiting your dentist every 6 months can prevent a lot of oral health related problems such as tooth decay and gum disease. It is better to have your teeth and gums checked on a regular basis, rather than waiting to be in pain. Usually once you start experiencing pain, there might not be a lot we could do for you other than extraction or root canal. Coming every 6 months can help us diagnose any cavities that might be just starting and fix them before they get bigger and needing a root canal!! Coming every 6 months can also help spot any early signs of gum disease and we will be able to tackle it in time before your teeth start getting loose!! So you end up saving money in the longer run.

How often do I need to get my teeth cleaned professionally?
Your teeth are covered in a sticky film known as dental plaque. This plaque contains hundreds of different species of bacteria responsible for both gum disease and tooth decay. If plaque is not removed on a regular basis, it can harden into calculus. You cannot get rid of calculus with your tooth-brush, we have to get rid of it with our special instruments. If calculus is not removed by the dental practitioners, it attracts more plaque due to its rough surface as such increases your risk for developing gum disease and tooth decay. Furthermore, gum disease has been linked to other systemic conditions such as heart attack, stroke, diabetes etc. Therefore, having your teeth cleaned professionally twice a year can also lower your chances of developing other systemic conditions.

Why do I need to floss?
Your tooth-brush bristles are unable to reach in between your teeth, no matter how hard you try. Both gum disease and tooth-decay start in between your teeth. Flossing regularly can lower your chances for developing both these diseases. Interesting fact- by not flossing you are missing 2 out of the 5 surfaces of your teeth!

Why do I need to have x-rays taken every 2 years?
Believe it or not, but we cannot see in between your teeth! X-rays help us see in between and check for any early signs of gum disease and tooth decay.

Can I get my teeth cleaned when I am pregnant?
Yes, it is perfectly safe to have your teeth clean when you are pregnant. In fact, we do recommend you getting a clean especially during pregnancy as pregnant women are more susceptible to gum disease (gingivitis). Moreover, studies have shown that poor oral health and gum disease can lead to adverse pregnancy outcomes such as birth of premature babies and also low birth weight babies.
