Choosing treatment
Questions about what we offer
- I do not know which of these I need. Where do I start?
- With an examination, and by describing the problem rather than naming a treatment. “The back one aches when I drink something cold” points somewhere much more precisely than “I think I need a crown”, and it quite often points somewhere cheaper.
- Is everything on this list done at the practice?
- Nearly all of it, including most extractions and wisdom teeth, which many practices refer out. What we refer on is braces and complex orthodontics, surgery needing a general anaesthetic, advanced periodontal surgery, and anything needing a hospital.
- How do you decide what to recommend?
- From the examination, the X-rays and what matters to you — including budget, which is a legitimate part of the conversation rather than something to work around. Where there is more than one reasonable option you will be told all of them, with costs, and the decision is yours.
- Do you offer sedation or general anaesthetic?
- Treatment here is under local anaesthetic. Where a general anaesthetic is the better option — typically a deeply impacted wisdom tooth, or a patient for whom treatment in the chair is not realistic — we will say so and refer you rather than press on.
- Can several treatments be done in one appointment?
- Frequently, and it is worth asking for rather than assuming. Some things genuinely have to be separated — a crown needs the laboratory in between — but a great deal can be combined if the appointment is booked long enough. Tell reception what you are hoping to get done.
- Do you do root canal treatment here?
- Yes, for most teeth. Where a case is unusually complex — an unusual root anatomy, or a re-treatment of previous root canal work — an endodontist will get a better result, and we will refer you rather than attempt it.

New patients are welcome six days a week. If it has been a while since your last check-up, say so when you book. We have heard it before.
