- What actually counts as a dental emergency?
- Pain that is keeping you awake or not responding to ordinary pain relief, a knocked-out or badly broken tooth, swelling around a tooth, or bleeding that will not stop. Swelling that is spreading, or affecting your eye or your breathing, is a hospital emergency rather than a dental one.
- What if it happens after you close?
- We are open until 7pm Tuesday and 8pm Thursday, and Saturday until 5pm, which covers more of the week than most practices. Outside that, ring us first thing and say it is urgent. If it cannot wait overnight, a hospital emergency department is the right call.
- I knocked a tooth out. What do I do right now?
- Hold it by the crown, never the root, and do not scrub it. Put it back in the socket if you can, or keep it in milk or in the side of your mouth, and ring us on the way. An adult tooth replaced quickly often survives.
- Does swelling change how urgent it is?
- Considerably. A swelling that is spreading, that closes an eye, that reaches under the jaw or into the neck, or that makes swallowing or breathing difficult is a hospital matter rather than a dental one, and it should not wait for us to open. Localised swelling around one tooth is urgent but not an emergency department.
- Should I take anything before I get in?
- Your usual over-the-counter pain relief at the dose on the packet. Ibuprofen generally works better than paracetamol on dental pain if you are able to take it. Do not hold an aspirin against the gum — it burns the tissue and does nothing for the tooth.
- What can you actually do at the first emergency visit?
- Find out which tooth it is, get you numb, and stop it hurting — draining an abscess, removing decay, relieving pressure, or dressing the tooth. It is not the appointment where everything is finished, and we will tell you plainly which parts are today and which are a separate booking.
