Mariginiup is acreage and market gardens, and a good number of properties out that way draw their water from a tank or a bore rather than from the scheme.

That matters more than most people are told. Perth's scheme water is fluoridated, and that fluoride is doing quiet, continuous work on everybody who drinks it. A household on tank or bore water is not getting it, and over years that shows up as a different decay pattern, most visibly in children.

It is entirely manageable, and the answer is not bottled water. It is knowing that it applies to you, so that the toothpaste, the brushing and the recall interval are set for the risk you actually carry rather than the average one.

Questions we get from Mariginiup

We are on tank water. Does it actually make a difference?
Yes, though not a dramatic one in any single year. Fluoridated scheme water gives low-level protection continuously, and a household without it carries a higher decay risk over time. It is worth telling us, because it is not something an examination reveals on its own.
Should my children use fluoride toothpaste?
Almost certainly, and the right strength depends on their age. Under about six the amount and the type both matter, because children swallow more toothpaste than they spit. Ask at their check-up and we will tell you what suits your children specifically.
Is there anything else we should be doing?
Possibly, and it depends on what we find. There are in-practice options for higher decay risk, but they are worth doing only when the risk is genuinely there. Raise the water at your examination and we will tell you whether yours is a case for them.
Is bore or tank water bad for teeth?
Not bad — it simply does not carry the added fluoride that scheme water does, so one of the background protections most Perth households get without thinking about it is absent. That does not mean more decay is inevitable; it means the other measures matter more.
Should we be using a fluoride mouthrinse as well?
Possibly, and it is worth asking at the examination rather than starting one on spec. It depends on age, on how much decay there has been, and on what else is going on. A high-fluoride toothpaste is sometimes the more useful answer.
Does bottled or filtered water make a difference?
Most bottled water contains little or no fluoride, and some filters remove it. Neither is a problem in itself — it is just worth knowing which of your household's water sources carry it, so the rest of the routine can be set accordingly.

If your water comes from a tank

Tell us at the examination. It is one of the few things a patient knows that we cannot see, and it changes the advice we give.

  • Decay risk assessed against your actual water supply, not the average

  • Toothpaste and brushing advice set for the household, adults and children separately

  • Recall interval matched to the risk rather than to a default
