Wondering about clear aligners cost? We explain why quotes differ and what to ask for in writing before you start treatment.

Clear Aligners Cost: Why Quotes Vary in Hocking & Wanneroo
Hocking Dental Care3 November 20268 min read

If you've been looking into straightening your teeth as an adult, you've probably noticed something frustrating. Every website seems to give a different answer to the same question. That's because clear aligners cost depends on your own teeth, not on a single fixed number anyone can quote you from a blog post. At Hocking Dental Care, we'd rather explain what actually drives the cost of your treatment, so you know what questions to ask before you say yes to anything.

This article walks through why quotes vary so much, what adults should expect from the process, how clear aligners compare with braces, and exactly what to get in writing before you start.

Why clear aligners cost varies so much from person to person

No two mouths move the same way. The biggest reason one quote might be higher than another is simply how much work your teeth need.

Case complexity

Mild crowding or a small gap usually needs less movement than a bite that's out of alignment. More complex cases need more planning, more trays and closer monitoring along the way, which all affects the overall fee.

Number of trays

Clear aligners work as a series of trays, each one moving your teeth a small step further than the last. A simple case might need a shorter series. A case involving more significant movement will need more trays, and more trays generally means a higher cost.

Refinements

Sometimes teeth don't track exactly as planned partway through treatment. When that happens, an extra round of trays called a refinement can help fine-tune the result. Some quotes include an allowance for refinements. Others charge for them separately if they're needed. This is one of the most common places a "cheap" quote turns out to cost more later, so it's worth asking about upfront.

Retainers

Once your teeth have moved, they need something to hold them in their new position. A retainer isn't optional extra polish, it's part of the treatment plan. If a retainer isn't included in your original quote, that's an added cost you should know about before you commit.

What adults should know about clear aligners

Clear aligners for adults have become a popular way to address crowding, gaps and mild bite concerns without fixed brackets and wires. They're removable, which means you can take them out to eat and clean your teeth normally.

That same flexibility means results depend partly on you. Aligners only move your teeth when you're actually wearing them as directed. If they're left out more than they should be, treatment can take longer and you may need extra trays to get back on track.

At Hocking Dental Care, we assess your teeth, discuss whether clear aligners are a suitable option for your case, and talk you through what the process involves before any treatment begins. Not every case is a good fit for aligners. Significant bite problems or more complex movements are sometimes better suited to other approaches, and we'll say so if that's the case for you.

How long do clear aligners take?

Treatment length depends entirely on how much your teeth need to move. Mild cases can be completed in a few months. More involved cases, especially those involving bite correction, can take considerably longer.

On top of the active treatment time, you'll also want to budget for time spent wearing a retainer afterwards to help keep your teeth in their new position. Your dentist can give you a realistic timeframe once they've had a proper look at your teeth and discussed your goals.

Clear aligners vs braces cost

People often ask how clear aligners vs braces cost compares. The honest answer is that it depends on your case. For milder concerns, aligners can sometimes work out similar to or less than braces. For more complex bite corrections, the two options can land in a similar range, because the cost is driven mainly by how much work the teeth need rather than which appliance is used.

Braces are provided by an orthodontist, not through our practice. If your case would be better suited to braces, we'll let you know and can discuss a referral. If aligners are appropriate for your teeth, our team can talk you through what's involved and give you a written estimate before you decide.

What to ask for in writing before you start

A written quote protects you from surprises partway through treatment. Before you commit to any provider, it's worth asking for the following in writing:

  • What the quoted fee actually includes, step by step
  • Whether refinements are included, and what happens if you need extra trays
  • Whether a retainer is included, or billed separately
  • How many review appointments are included during treatment
  • What happens if you lose or damage a tray

At Hocking Dental Care, we give every patient a written estimate with item numbers before any treatment starts, so you can see exactly what you're agreeing to and check it against your health fund if you have one.

Health funds and clear aligners

If you have private health insurance with extras cover, you may be able to claim part of your treatment. We're a preferred provider for HBF, Medibank, HCF, nib and Bupa, which usually means a smaller gap for you to pay, though it isn't free. HICAPS lets us process many fund claims on the spot, and if your fund isn't one of these five, you can usually still submit a claim yourself afterwards.

Every policy is different, with its own waiting periods and yearly limits for orthodontic treatment, so it's worth checking the details of your own cover. You can read more about how fees and health fund claiming generally works on our fees and rebates page, and your fund can confirm your personal limits and any waiting period that applies.

If you're new to extras cover and thinking about timing, most funds reset annual limits on 31 December, but check your own fund's reset date before planning around it.

Frequently asked questions

Is clear aligners cost the same for everyone?

No. Clear aligners cost depends on how much your teeth need to move, how many trays your plan requires, and whether refinements or a retainer are included in the quote. This is why we assess your teeth properly before giving you a figure, rather than quoting a number over the phone.

Can adults get clear aligners at any age?

Yes, clear aligners for adults are common, and age on its own isn't usually a barrier. What matters more is the health of your gums and teeth, and whether your particular case is suitable for aligner treatment. We'll check this at your appointment.

Do I need a referral to start clear aligners?

No referral is needed. You can book a consultation directly with our team, where we'll examine your teeth, discuss your goals and let you know whether clear aligners are a good fit before anything is booked in.

What happens if my teeth don't move as planned?

Sometimes a refinement, which is an extra round of trays, is needed partway through treatment to adjust the result. This is a normal part of aligner treatment for some patients. It's worth checking before you start whether refinements are included in your quote.

Will clear aligners hurt?

It's common to feel some pressure for a day or two after switching to a new tray, as your teeth adjust. If you have ongoing discomfort, follow the directions on any pain relief packaging or ask a pharmacist, and let our team know so we can check things are tracking properly.

Getting a clear picture before you decide

Clear aligners cost varies because every mouth is different, and a responsible quote reflects that rather than offering a one-size-fits-all number. The best way to get a real answer for your own teeth is a proper assessment, not a guess based on an average you've read online.

If you're a new patient wanting to know more about what a first visit involves, our new patients page explains what to expect, including the written estimate you'll receive before any treatment begins. We also allow extra time for patients who feel nervous about dental visits, and you're always welcome to ask us to slow down or stop at any point.

At Hocking Dental Care, we're a family-owned practice on Greenfields Circle in Hocking, and we see the same patients visit after visit, from first check-ups through to more involved treatment like aligners. If you'd like to find out whether clear aligners suit your teeth, give our team a call on (08) 9306 2755 or choose a time that works for you to book online. We'll talk you through your options and put everything in writing before you decide.
